The Battle of Manzikert, also known as the Battle of Malazgirt, was fought on August 26, 1071, near Manzikert, Armenia, between the Byzantine Empire and Seljuk forces led by Alp Arslan (modern Malazgirt, Turkey). The Byzantine Empire was defeated, and Emperor Romanus IV Diogenes was captured.
